Pacifiers: Which Ones Babies Actually Keep In
We tested seven pacifiers on three newborns. Four got spit across the room within a week. Here's what separated the survivors.
What to look for
- One-piece silicone. No seams, no crevices, nothing to pull apart. Dishwasher-safe.
- The right size. 0–3 month pacifiers are smaller and lighter. A too-big paci gets pushed out by the tongue.
- Vented shield. Keeps drool from pooling and causing rash.
- Buy multiples of the winner. Once baby picks one, you want six of it. Not six different ones.
- A clip. Not optional once you're in the car. Infantino's 3-pack fits every pacifier.
The survivors
- Philips Avent Soothie. Same shape most maternity wards hand out, so there's no relearning. Our top pick.
- Dr. Brown's HappyPaci. Shaped like a bottle nipple. Bottle-fed babies take it instantly.
- BIBS. Round natural-rubber shield, the one in every stroller photo. Pricier, and some babies love it.
Tip: If you're breastfeeding, most lactation consultants suggest waiting until feeding is established (often 3–4 weeks) before introducing a pacifier. Ask yours.
